Woody Allen and Dylan found happiness together.
Why is that so hard to understand?

Talking with a nonbeliever...
by suavojr inin my search for the truth and the burning desire to become free from all forms of dogma and wishful thinking.
i have approached my first crossroads in my life, should i continue to believe in a god or not?.
currently i am leaning toward agnosticism, but all the suffering in the world, all the loss and pain in my own life makes it hard for me to simply let go of the idea and hope that at the end justice will prevail, that one day god can make it all good.. .

The reason for your uncertainty regarding god, is that there is not a shred of evidence that such a being exists. The fact that millions of people cling to the hope that such a being exists is sad. Their hope is evidence only of mass delusion. If a being almighty enough to create the universe existed, you would not be asking.
If you have to ask whether you should continue to believe in god or not, you have answered your own question. You know with certainty that you exist; that president Barack Obama exists; that animals exist. You know that Elvis Presley did but doesn't now. Just use the same power of reasoning to confirm the existence anything else.

Simon gets a prize, cos on this site he is god. He has power over our continued forum existence and does take action when required. And that’s as close to heaven as we’ll ever be.
Unfortunately this debate has been derailed by Flamegrilled’s philosophical approach to the subject. We were discussing reality verses myth and fabrication. The reality is that the conceptual god did not act to save 250,000 live in the tsunami. This is easily explained; such a god does not exist.
The theory, that if such a god does exist, he may have knowledge that we don't, so therefore we are impotent and unable to arrive at a moral conclusion, is all supposition. First we need to establish that such a being exists. Having done that, we can analyze why he does nothing.
Until I have proof to the contrary I am bound to reality. God is a trick of the mind. So, the concept of an all knowing god can only be sustained by further tricks of the mind. I’ve done a few mental summersaults in my time, but have moved on. Fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice shame on me.

Flamegrilled - I refuse to talk about it and I don't like your tone
That is all you have done throughout this discussion. With each non-statement you make your god looks less credible.
With believers like you - who need enemies?

Most Ridiculous Thing You've Ever Been Counseled On
by MrFreeze ini'm sure topics like this have already come up but they tend to get hilarious with the absolute absurdity that goes on in the kh.
i was once counseled for not shaving after two days.
i was also counseled by a sister for eating lucky charms cereal.

As a single man many years ago, at one boring evening meeting I slipped away at half time to the boozer next door. After the meeting some young brothers joined me to put the world right over a few beers. Later in the week the elders slapped my wrist, ever so gently. I told them that I needed the beer to suppress my sex drive. They were an understanding lot.

snare&racket “What did god do to people he didn't like?
What did god do to people that did not obey?
What did god do to those that broke his laws?
He..... KILLED them. God did not look down on the flood and pour water on babies, children and all but 8 of mankind out of LOVE, it was in anger and as a PUNISHMENT.
So even the bible, communicating the activity, words and thoughts of god makes clear that death is not just a BAD thing, but a PUNISHMENT.”
An excellent post. However, may I remind you that the new generation of Christians has become very slippery and openly declares that the bible is not the word of their god. Personal revelation is now back in vogue.
Only selected bible passages taken from a friendly translation, that fits in with carefully chosen beliefs promoting Jesus’ kindness, are permissible in any discussion about all things spiritual.
